Red Sox: Kiké Hernandez appears to troll Eduardo Rodriguez after home run

Red Sox outfielder Kiké Hernandez celebrated hitting a home run off former teammate Eduardo Rodriguez by pointing to his wrist like the pitcher once did.

Kiké Hernandez’s first home run of the season for the Red Sox just so happened to come off his former teammate Eduardo Rodriguez now pitching for the Tigers.

The third-inning blast tied the game at 1-1. It, along with Hernandez’s fourth-inning double, helped Boston beat Detroit 9-7.

Whether Hernandez was just enjoying taking his former teammate yard, or there’s underlying beef there, the outfielder seemed to target his celebration specifically to Rodriguez.

Hernandez pointed to his wrist while making his celebratory laundry cart ride down the dugout.

Fans may remember the whole wrist-pointing saga from the 2021 postseason. Carlos Correa of the Astros hit a home run in Game 1 of the ALCS and pointed to his wrist while saying, “my time.”

After Rodriguez got him out at the end of the sixth inning of Game 3, the pitcher stared down the batter while pointing to his own wrist.

Boston manager Alex Cora chastised Rodriquez for trying to show up his opponent and the moment definitely seemed to backfire. Even though the Red Sox took Game 3, they were eliminated while being outscored 23-3 in the remaining three games of the series.

In that sense, Hernandez may be playing with fire there. The wrist tap didn’t work out for the Red Sox last time. Maybe this time it will serve as a sort of exorcism or maybe it’ll come back to bite them.

Hernandez went 2-for-5 with two RBI in the victory. Rodriguez had a disastrous fourth inning, amplified by throwing errors by his infielders, and was pulled with six runs on the board.
