Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes opened up on his initial reaction to finding out that Tyreek Hill would be traded away to the Miami Dolphins.

When beloved Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill was traded away to the Miami Dolphins, many Chiefs fans were stunned into silence. After all, Hill had been with the Chiefs for six seasons, building up a team that became a perennial championship contender. The Chiefs benefitted from his unmatched speed, but just as quickly, Hill seemed to be gone in search of greener pastures in Miami.

Mahomes, who did not immediately share his thoughts on the Tyreek Hill trade publicly, has now had time to process what the surprising development means for him.

“Obviously my initial reaction was a little bit of shock,” Mahomes said.

In a lengthy statement, Mahomes revealed that his surprise at knowing his longtime teammate would be gone gave way to happiness for his friend.

Still, Mahomes made it clear that with Hill moving on, Mahomes knew he needed to move on as well. Mahomes shared his approval of the Marquez Valdes-Scantling signing over Twitter, and Mahomes said that he has already met up with his new receivers in order to start building chemistry for 2022.

“I got with these new receivers as quickly as possible and try and build and so that we can have success right when we get going this year,” Mahomes said.

According to ProFootballTalk, Mahomes has already been working out in Texas alongside some of his teammates in order to get an early start on next season.

Mahomes always seems to be thinking ahead, proven by the fact that the 26-year-old quarterback is already on pace to become the NFL’s first billionaire player. As someone who has played with Hill his entire NFL career, Mahomes knows it will take years to rebuild that kind of connection with someone, so an early start is necessary.
