Former five-star offensive tackle Amarius Mims is returning to the Georgia football program after briefly dipping his toes into the transfer portal last week.

The Georgia football program gets great news right after G-Day, as former five-star offensive lineman Amarius Mims has decided to exit the transfer portal and return to Athens.

DawgsHQ reported that Mims “is expected to stay at Georgia and remove his name from the transfer portal.” Mims first entered the transfer portal last week during the latter stages of Georgia spring practice. He visited with Florida State last weekend and had drawn interest from Miami as well, but Mims opted to come back to Georgia for his second season with the program.

With Jamaree Salyer and Justin Shaffer having turned pro, there may be an opportunity for Mims to crack the deep offensive line rotation in his second season at Georgia.

Georgia football program gets back former 5-star OL Amarius Mims from portal

Though two starters off last year’s offensive line have moved onto the NFL, Mims seemed to be on the outside looking in at a starting spot during the better part of spring practice. Broderick Jones seems have taken full control of the left tackle spot, while Xavier Truss and Devin Willock have gotten most of the run at guard. Mims seems okay with playing the waiting game … for now.

See, Jones was willing to bide out his time as a backup before getting his first real significant opportunity with the program in the trenches entering year three. He too was a former five-star in-state recruit. Georgia may be the reigning national champions, but guys wielding that type of talent might be chomping at the bit to play Power Five football, even at a place like Florida State.

While Miami fans are epically trolling Florida State for being unable to land Mims in the portal, it has to be concerning for the Seminoles to have this kind of a breakdown after a former five-star spent the weekend on their campus. Either way, Mims is poised to come back to Athens and compete for whatever opportunity the Georgia football program can hope to provide him.

Look for Georgia to be even better offensively coming off what was a defensive-led championship.
