Ben McAdoo says Sam Darnold is the Carolina Panthers starting quarterback before immediately taking it back while at the podium.

Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo immediately regretted his decision to say Sam Darnold is the team’s starting quarterback.

On the latest episode of why the Panthers are destined to win five games again, McAdoo messed up big time at the podium. While New York chewed him up and spit him out just like Gang Green did with the former USC star, there is no reason to put any stock of Darnold being the Panthers’ Week 1 starter. They can select a franchise quarterback at No. 6, or trade for a stop-gap as well.

Frankly, Kenny Pickett, Malik Willis, Matt Corral, Baker Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo all have a better shot of being the Panthers’ Week 1 starter over the former New York Jets quarterback who crashed and burned.

No Ragrets: Ben McAdoo prematurely names Sam Darnold Panthers starting QB

Look. Carolina has to get this thing right in 2022 or Matt Rhule is going back to college. If Jerry Jones has enough of Mike McCarthy’s clock management shenanigans, he will back up the BRINKS truck to bring Jim Harbaugh back to the NFL. Guess where an unemployed Rhule is going if the Panthers’ quarterbacks stink again? That Michigan man will be on the first flight to Ann Arbor.

The only thing NFL fans have seen out of Darnold in four years is an inherently reckless mess under center who wishes he could be Carson Wentz. Trotting him out there means the Panthers are finishing last in the NFC South again, and they play in the same division as the Atlanta Falcons. The Atlanta Falcons?! For the love of Charlotte, let’s hope Carolina gets a new quarterback in 2022.

Ultimately, Darnold could end up being the guy if the Panthers continue to be a hot mess under newish owner David Tepper. If he is, then their fans have the right to pick a new team. McAdoo may have been a great coordinator from his time in Green Bay, but he has not learned much of anything at the podium since he benched Eli Manning for Geno Smith. What a blazing tire fire!

Expect for the Panthers to draft Corral, Pickett or Willis at No. 6 and hit full reset on their rebuild.
