Cardinals: 3 glaring roster holes keeping St. Louis from World Series contention

The St. Louis Cardinals have some glaring holes on their roster that will prevent them from being seriously considered World Series contenders.

With the exception of Steven Matz and Albert Pujols, the St. Louis Cardinals made several small moves to better themselves for the 2022 season. As the season is getting underway, the moves appear to be good but not enough to get the organization a 12th World Series championship.

The Cardinals are off to a good start at 9-6, but there is always room for improvement.

Albert Pujols provides a sense of nostalgia for fans and the organization. He provides leadership in the clubhouse. A powerful bat against lefties that you don’t mind facing righties. He can provide backup to Gold Glove first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, but it’s probably not something the team is looking to do.

The club did sign Corey Dickerson as a lefty designated hitter option who can also help out in the left field. With two-time Gold Glover Tyler O’Neill manning left field, it’s not something the Cardinals are seeking to do often.

The team will be seeking to use Pujols and Dickerson as they can, though.

Cardinals have plenty of roster holes

Pitching is often seen as something needed at the start of the season. With it being the end of April after a shortened Spring Training, it seems all teams could use a little pitching help. The Cardinals are no exception.

Cardinals’ new manager Oliver Marmol has a good team to work with, but they definitely have some holes that need filling before they can assuredly be considered for the World Series. The club has high hopes for that 12th World Series championship with Pujols and Yadier Molina in their final seasons, Adam Wainwright’s winding his career down, and Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt in their prime along with so many young, dynamic role players.
