Tom Brady dunks on Raiders fans, finally admits Tuck Rule might have been a fumble

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady references the painful Tuck Rule moment for Raiders fans as he jokes around with Justin Bieber on Instagram.

Tom Brady has done enough to torment the Raiders for a lifetime, and it all began on a snowy January night in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

It was the 2001 AFC Divisional Playoff game between the New England Patriots and the Oakland Raiders, and Brady’s former Michigan teammate, Charles Woodson, came charging towards Brady as he held the ball.

Brady pumped the ball, Woodson collided into Brady, and the ball tumbled to the ground. But under NFL rules at that time, it wasn’t considered a fumble.

The infamous game became known as “The Tuck Rule game” due to the “tuck” that Brady did with the ball and the rule that deemed it an incomplete forward pass. For Raiders fans, it’s an eternal source of ire.

For Brady, it’s a source of never-ending laughter.

Brady responded to Justin Bieber’s query to be told “something honest” on TikTok, and Brady delivered.

“The Tuck Rule Game against the Raiders,” Brady said, jokingly looking over each shoulder. “…It might have been a fumble,” he whispered.

Funnily enough, this isn’t the first time in 2022 that Brady has joked about the Tuck Rule. Earlier this year, ESPN released a “30 For 30” documentary about the pivotal moment in sports and pop culture.

In the documentary, Brady and Woodson gather at Brady’s home and rewatch that moment in the game, describing what that moment was like for each of them. Looking back, the play became a make-it-or-break-it moment for Woodson and Brady: it prevented Woodson and the Raiders from getting a ring in the 2001 season, while the Patriots dynasty and Brady’s mythology was born.

Of course, it’s not as if Woodson had a bad career in any regard: he’s a generational defensive back who made the 2021 Pro Football Hall of Fame class.

Still, Woodson is pretty salty about how the Tuck Rule went down.

“It was the worst call in the history of sports,” he declared in the trailer for “The Tuck Rule: The Call That Changed it All.”
