MLB Power Rankings: Brewers are kings of the Central, Astros invading the West
By Tim Boyle
15) MLB Power Rankings: Miami Marlins
Why are the Miami Marlins ahead of the Braves? The Marlins have a +8 run differential compared to the Braves who are still at -3. The two clubs are about even in the standings with Miami having one less win and loss.
If the Marlins were a stock, they’d be worth buying and holding. You probably bought it cheaply anyway. Why sell? Still, we shouldn’t expect too much out of them. They are nowhere near ready to do anything more than spoil another team’s season. Their starting pitching certainly can bring a few tears to National League fans.
14) MLB Power Rankings: Chicago White Sox
The Chicago White Sox were so insulted by their spot on last week’s MLB Power Rankings they decided to win six straight, push themselves over .500 and regain the credibility they had lost. Kudos to them.
This won’t be the year Tim Anderson wins an MVP but he definitely needs to become known as one of the best shortstops in the game. Ignored for far too long, he keeps the spark alive in the lineup. Of course, the pitching is what has won the White Sox. They may have turned a corner. Don’t look back.
13) MLB Power Rankings: Colorado Rockies
How the Colorado Rockies have managed to play this well after a month of baseball is a bit of a surprise. They do have a run differential of -13 which tells us some good and bad. They must be capable of winning close games but take their foot off the gas entirely in many of their losses.
It’s impossible to tell how good or bad certain Rockies players are because of the ballpark they play in. That’s why wins matter most—however they find them. The Rockies are succeeding in this scavenger hunt early. Put them in either of the other two National League divisions and they might be playing so much better.
12) MLB Power Rankings: San Francisco Giants
Entering this week, the San Francisco Giants actually have the same exact record as the Rockies. They had a much rougher week than Colorado. While they capped it off with two weekend victories, they’ve slid into a two for the second wild card spot. San Francisco still holds a lot of power. They need to prove it when they open a series against the Rockies this week.
The Giants remain a limited team. They were hoping to have one of the best rotations in baseball which hasn’t happen yet. Fully capable of earning a playoff spot or finishing around .500, this team will need a few surprises from the roster if they want to overtake others within their division.
11) MLB Power Rankings: Toronto Blue Jays
This is a deep drop for the Toronto Blue Jays. The loaded American League East club with bats and arms galore remain in a fantastic position to make it to the playoffs and do everything else needed to win a championship. However, they’ve been passed by two others in their division and haven’t been playing their best baseball over the last week.
Falling out of the top ten shouldn’t concern anyone who cheers for the Blue Jays. Their lineup is still strong. This may simply just be a case of guys coming back to their averages. If there is one thing to worry about it could be the sustainability of their pitching. The team needs a little more from Jose Berrios. Next week, they should be back in the top ten.
