MLB rumors: 5 favorites to trade for Xander Bogaerts

4) MLB rumors: San Diego Padres are a sneaky fit for Xander Bogaerts
The San Diego Padres could actually use Bogaerts right now. With Fernando Tatis Jr. still on the IL, they have been giving the bulk of the starts at shortstop to Ha-Seong Kim. He is one of several underperforming position players on the roster for them. Along with second baseman Jake Croneworth, they have been a meager double play duo on the offensive side of the ball.
In fact, things have been so bad they even took a chance on Robinson Cano to help bolster the infield and maybe give them some good at-bats as the DH.
Despite the struggles, the Padres are right there with the rest of the teams in the National League West. A trade for Bogaerts would boost the shortstop position for sure. However, since the trade probably wouldn’t even take place until after Tatis Jr. returns, he would more likely find himself playing at second base.
San Diego would also have the option of keeping Tatis Jr. fresh and putting him at the DH spot as well. Whatever their plan would be, the Padres need to find a boost to the lineup. With some talented young players they can still swap for improvements to their roster, it’s something they should explore as the season goes on.
