Quarterback Taisun Phommachanh is transferring to Georgia Tech after leaving Clemson.

After playing sparingly over the last few seasons at Clemson, former four-star quarterback Taisun Phommachanh has found a new place to play in the ACC by transferring to Georgia Tech.

Phommachanh entered the transfer portal back in early December after spending three years at Clemson. The Bridgeport, Connecticut native will have a great opportunity to compete for and win the starting job in Atlanta. This is a critical year for Geoff Collins on The Flats, as the Ramblin’ Wreck need to push towards bowl eligibility for him to get potentially another season at the helm.

Phommachanh announced his intention to transfer to Georgia Tech over Twitter Monday night.

Former Clemson QB Taisun Phommachanh transfers to ACC rival Georgia Tech

Though the Tigers and the Jackets play in opposite divisions in the ACC, they have a long-standing rivalry on the football field. Given the schools’ close proximity to each other, it understandable why the ACC made them cross-divisional foes when adopting the Atlantic and Coastal Division many seasons ago. While Clemson has had the upper hand of late, Georgia Tech may be on the come-up.

It was always going to take time for the Yellow Jackets to rejoin the rest of the college football world after dancing with the devil that is the triple-option. Though Paul Johnson brought on-field success to Georgia Tech, the Jackets continued to lose more and more recruiting ground in their talent-rich state. Getting a four-star to transfer from a conference rival is a huge step for them.

Ultimately, Phommachanh is a college prospect synonymous with potential and injuries. He chose to come to Clemson at the same time as Trevor Lawrence and now D.J. Uiagalelei. Though he may have enjoyed his time at Clemson, it served him to explore what other opportunities were out there for him. Together, perhaps Phommachanh can help Georgia Tech get back to winning games?

No doubt about it, this is a such tremendous pickup for the Yellow Jackets in the transfer portal.
