Frankie Montas trade rumors: New York Mets

The likelihood that the Mets would figure into Frankie Montas possible landing spot increased this week when the club learned Max Scherzer will likely miss 6-to-8 weeks with a high-grade oblique strain.

Scherzer leads a staff that includes Chris Bassitt, Carlos Carrasco, Taijuan Walker and Tylor Megill. Jacob deGrom remains on the injured. Mad Max was 5-1 after eight games and 49.2 innings. He’s had 59 strikeouts. Losing his presence on the mound every fifth day will be felt the later in the season the Mets go.

While David Peterson will likely report back to the Mets, it will be interesting to see what moves if any the Mets make. The club did sign veteran Trevor Cahill to a minor league deal. They currently have a seven game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in a highly competitive NL East.

Don’t be surprised to see Mets owner Steve Cohen in the mix for Montas after the significant loss of Scherzer.
