Cam Smith was looking to make a move on Saturday at the PGA Championship, but it’s hard to think that hitting a fellow golfer with a drive was in his plans.

At the 2022 PGA Championship, one of the idiosyncrasies of Southern Hills Country Club is the close proximity of other holes. Yes, many courses that we see often on the PGA Tour have fairways that run parallel to one another and Southern Hills has that too, but there are crossing tee-boxes and greens all throughout the Tulsa property.

While you might think that those close proximities might lead to some wild happenings, it was actually the routine parallel fairways and the high winds on Friday that led to Cam Smith hitting a drive that struck fellow competitor, Aaron Wise, in the middle of the adjacent fairway.

There isn’t video of the drive itself hitting Wise, but you can see the image of the aftermath at the top of this page. Moreover, they discussed the incident on the ESPN+ broadcast, saying that Wise didn’t actually talk to Smith about what had happened in order to not distract him too much from his round.

If you think that hitting a drive so poorly that it strikes another golfer on another fairway might not bode well for the round, Smith turned that narrative on its head. He was playing a good, clean round on the scorecard and sitting a 1-under through his first nine holes with no bogeys on the card.

As for Wise, he was clearly a bit shaken up by it but continued his round.

Suffice it to say that the weather is most definitely playing a factor at Southern Hills and whoever wins the PGA Championship might be the one who puts up the best fight against it.
