Kyler Murray contract drama quietly still brewing for Cardinals

Of course, Kyler Murray is not going to be attending Arizona Cardinals’ OTAs later this week.

In the least shocking news of the day, the Arizona Cardinals will be without their star quarterback Kyler Murray when they commence organized teams activities later this week.

Murray is entering his fourth season with the franchise since going No. 1 overall out of Oklahoma in 2019. While Arizona qualified for the NFL playoffs, Murray played terribly vs. the division rival Los Angeles Rams in the final game of Wild Card Weekend. With this being a contract year for him to some extent, it is understandable why he and his camp are holding out for more money now.

Though contract talks are quiet for the time being, expect for them to pick up again this summer.

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport added that he believes “Kyler Murray and the Cardinals are fine … they are on the same page and moving forward together” during his latest appearance on The Pat McAfee Show Monday.

So much has been made about the offseason drama surrounding the Cardinals and their franchise quarterback. Murray was talented enough to be the No. 1 overall pick after winning the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma in his only year as the starter in Norman. Though he did play for Lincoln Riley, Murray has proven to be the best signal-caller Riley has had up to this point who has turned pro.

Where things have gotten a little dicey this offseason is Murray scrubbing his Instagram of all things related to the Cardinals and his former teammate Larry Fitzgerald having questions about his leadership traits and personality. Murray is who he is, and the Cardinals know that. Though he will be getting paid, the question remains how much will they pay their undersized quarterback?

Murray’s camp may expect for him to get top-dollar and re-set the market, but what has Murray proven up to this point? He has led the team to the playoffs once and has never won a postseason game. Lamar Jackson has won a league MVP and still has not gotten paid, and he hails from the previous draft class. That may be all of his own doing, but Murray is not getting Josh Allen money.

Though he will probably be getting a new contract, the Cardinals need to be careful what they pay.
