The New York Mets reportedly feel confident that ace Jacob deGrom will be able to return at some point in June.

The New York Mets have had a great start to the season, but they have dealt with some serious injuries to their starting rotation. The first big domino to fall was ace Jacob deGrom, who suffered a stress reaction to his right scapula that would sideline him for a significant chunk of time. Yet, the Mets feel confident that he could return rather soon.

MLB insider Jon Heyman noted on the latest episode of his podcast, “The Show,” that he heard from a member of the team that they feel that deGrom could return in June.

“DeGrom, I finally heard a timetable. Somebody with the Mets told me late June,” Heyman said, h/t SNY. “To me, that seems optimistic. I’m looking at July, I think him and (Max) Scherzer coming back around the All-Star break makes sense — they felt June is a possibility for deGrom.”

Mets reportedly feel Jacob deGrom can return in late June

deGrom was seen throwing at Citi Field as he recovers from injury. Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News says that there is a possibility that deGrom could throw off a mound for a bullpen session as soon as this weekend.

The last update the team provided was on May 17, when they said deGrom underwent follow-up imaging that revealed “continued healing in the scapula.”

Getting deGrom back would be huge for the Mets. When he was sidelined, there was a sigh of relief breathed by Mets fans knowing that they still had Max Scherzer at the top of the rotation. However, he suffered a “moderate to high grade” oblique strain that would sideline him between six-to-eight weeks.

Mets fans will hold out hope and continue to follow the updates on deGrom as they arrive in the coming days and weeks. But they will definitely be circling late June on their calendars to see if that was actually a realistic hope that came to fruition.
