T.J. McFarland

T.J. McFarland has had a terrible season for the Cardinals out of the bullpen. In 18 games, he’s given up 29 hits over 20 innings thrown. He’s given up 17 runs, including four home runs. He has struck out 12 batters this season.

The Cardinals need better out of their bullpen. Once Flaherty returns and more is known about Steven Matz’s return from the injured list, the Cardinals will be able to really examine what they have in the way of their rotation and bullpen after the promotion of Matthew Liberatore.

Andre Pallante has been good in long relief. Genesis Cabrera and Giovanny Gallegos have played their roles well. Ryan Helsley has stifled batters with his flame-throwing abilities. Packy Naughton and Jake Woodford have provided spot starts for the Cardinals coming from Memphis. It’s possible one of these options or another pitcher from Memphis could provide relief better than McFarland.

McFarland was signed with the Cardinals to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million. Once more is known about the Cardinals pitching, the Cardinals could certainly part ways with McFarland. He just hasn’t provided what the Cardinals hoped from him. He’s provided more frustration to the team and fans than opposing batters.
