Angels send firm message with Joe Maddon decision

The Los Angeles Angels have fired manager Joe Maddon.

In a big turn of events, the Los Angeles Angels have fired manager Joe Maddon after the club has lost 12 straight games, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. Before the losing streak, as Passan notes, the Angels were 27-17, which was the eighth-best record in baseball.

Third base coach Phil Nevin will take over as interim manager, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post.

Joe Maddon has been fired by the Angels after 2 seasons

Joe Maddon returned to the Los Angeles Angels before the 2020 season after he spent more than 30 years with the franchise from 1975 through 2005, culminating in being their interim manager twice and being their MLB bench coach in the early 2000s.

However, his winning pedigree as the manager of the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs did not transfer over to the Angels, despite them having two of the best players in the world (Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani). He ends up going 130-148 in this stint with the team.

New interim manager Phil Nevin was in his first year as third base coach for the Angels. He was the third base coach for the Yankees and Giants prior to that. He also played in the majors for the Angels in 1998.
