Five-star quarterback CJ Carr, the grandson of former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, spurned the Wolverines and committed to Notre Dame football.

Marcus Freeman’s recruiting ability continues to give Notre Dame football a huge boost, this time at the expense of Michigan.

The Irish landed a commitment from five-star quarterback CJ Carr on Thursday. That’s notable not just because Carr is one of the top QB prospects in the class of 2024. He’s also the grandson of Michigan national title-winning head coach Lloyd Carr.

Carr probably should have been a layup for the Wolverines but Freeman, OC Tommy Rees and Notre Dame got the nod instead. It’s a sign of how power could shift in favor of the Irish under the new regime.

The quarterback also considered Michigan State, Wisconsin, Georgia and LSU.

Notre Dame football lands commitment from CJ Carr

Carr ranks No. 20 in the 247Sports composite for 2024, sitting fifth among quarterbacks. He is the No. 1 prospect in the state of Michigan.

Allen Trieu of 247Sports called Carr a “very cerebral player” with good accuracy and arm strength.

As a sophomore starter in 2021, Carr threw for 2,696 yards and 28 touchdowns. He had just four interceptions.

Carr is one of three commits for Notre Dame in the class of 2024. Having the elite quarterback on board early should give the Irish a key player to build the rest of the class around.

It’s still early for the class of 2023 as well but Freeman is showing his chops in that group as well. His 14 commitments have Notre Dame holding the No. 1 spot in 247Sports recruiting class rankings.
