Texas A&M tried to get Nick Saban punished for his NIL comments
By John Buhler
Texas A&M actually tried to get Nick Saban punished by the SEC for his comments about NIL.
It may not be grade school, but Texas A&M went full-blown “I’m telling” on Alabama head football coach Nick Saban after the less-than-flattering remarks he made about the Aggies’ NIL situation.
Andy Wittry of On3 reported, “Texas A&M University president M. Katherine Banks and director of athletics Ross Bjork told SEC commissioner Greg Sankey the conference should consider suspending and fining Saban for his comments.”
This came the morning after Saban suggested Texas A&M “bought every player on their team.”
Here is an excerpt from the email Texas A&M University sent to SEC commissioner Greg Sankey.
"“Coach Saban’s statement is false, beneath the dignity of the SEC, and corrosive to the fabric of sportsmanship in college football as a whole and especially within the SEC. We expect the league to take strong, public action against Coach Saban and the University of Alabama to demonstrate that such unprofessionalism and disrespect for Texas A&M’s student-athletes, coaches, and the university as a whole, will not be tolerated. A public apology from Coach Saban to Coach Fisher, Aggie Football, and Texas A&M University is a good starting point, but the league should also consider monetary and participation penalties against Coach Saban."
Texas A&M may have big boosters, but the Aggies have never recruited like this before. It is no coincidence their historic recruiting class comes in the Wild, Wild West of NIL. Saban may be being a bad sport after losing to an SEC West rival in recruiting battles after the rules of the game have changed. However, it is abundantly clear NIL and the transfer portal need some guardrails, alright.
When Alabama hosts Texas A&M, this will be a must-see television college football spectacular.
Texas A&M tried to tell on Nick Saban to SEC commissioner Greg Sankey
The only way this offseason saga of our lifetimes gets better is if Saban mutters “snitches get stitches” in the first press conference heading into the A&M game. Yes, he can beat the Aggies by the pettiest score possible. One would expect him to run up the score against his biggest SEC West foe for the time being. Keep in mind Alabama lost to the Aggies in College Station last year.
Even if Commissioner Sankey reprimanded both national championship-winning head coaches for their role in this “embarrassing” series of unfortunate events, it just means more, dammit. Deep down, we all know he is secretly loving this. His league led the news cycle for multiple days in May. SEC Media Days aren’t for weeks, but all coverage is good coverage. There’s no sense in denying it.
Ultimately, Alabama and Texas A&M should be two of the better teams in the SEC this season. They should have serious College Football Playoff aspirations. Anything short of a return trip to the title bout will be seen as a failure for the Crimson Tide. As far as the Aggies are concerned, getting to Atlanta is a real possibility, but getting to a New Year’s Six bowl is the likelier outcome.
May utter hatred pump through the veins of Bama Hammers and everyone from Gig Em Nation.
