This year’s US Open Championship will be played at one of golf’s most historic venues, The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.

The 122nd US Open Championship will take place at The Country Club located in Brookline, Massachusetts. The Country Club is one of the oldest and most historic golf courses in the United States.

The Country Club at Brookline was one of the five charter clubs that founded the USGA. The other four are St. Andrews Golf Club (NY), Newport Country Club, Chicago Golf Club, and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

Where is The Country Club?

Located just outside the city of Boston, The Country Club at Brookline began with just three holes back in 1883. By 1899, golf course designer Willie Campbell had turned The Country Club into an 18-hole course.

Believe it or not, the first-ever major event played at The Country Club was the U.S. Women’s Amateur in 1902 which was won by Genevieve Hecker. The first U.S. Amateur at Brookline on the men’s side was played in 1910 with William C. Fownes Jr. capturing the title.

When did The Country Club last host the US Open?

It’s actually been quite some time since the US Open was played at The Country Club. It took a playoff against golf legend Nick Faldo to do it, but Curtis Strange won the first of his two US Open Championships in 1988 at The Country Club in Brookline.

Prior to 1988, The Country Club hosted the US Open in 1963 when Julius Boros won his second major championship and in 1913 when Francis Ouimet won in an 18-hole playoff over Harry Vardon and Ted Ray.

While not a US Open, golf fans probably remember the improbable run to victory that the US Ryder Cup team had in 1999. Justin Leonard’s 45-foot birdie putt occurred on the 17th green at The Country Club in Brookline.

Will we see a similar type of drama occur this Sunday at The Country Club in Brookline? The field is loaded with talented golfers and defending champion Jon Rahm will be looking for his second major championship when play begins on Thursday morning.
