Scottie Scheffler made a terrific chip on No. 14 during Friday’s action at the US Open. That shot punctuated Scheffler’s rise up the leaderboard.

You didn’t count out the world’s best golfer after the first round of the 2022 US Open, right? For your sake, I hope you didn’t. Don’t look now, but Scottie Scheffler has vaulted himself up the leaderboard and was sitting in a tie for first place after he left the 18th green on Friday afternoon.

Scheffler is the No. 1-ranked golfer in the world for a reason. The 25-year-old has four victories on the PGA Tour this season, including winning his first-ever green jacket at Augusta in April. Scheffler won The Masters by three strokes over Rory McIlroy.

Scottie Scheffler’s chip on No. 14 helped vault him up the leaderboard at the US Open.

The US Open is one of the most difficult tests in golf each and every year and The Country Club at Brookline is no exception. Scottie Scheffler shot a 70 during Round 1, which was three strokes back of the group tied atop the leaderboard after Thursday.

Scheffler, along with Brooks Koepka and Cam Smith, was out early. Scheffler parred his first four, but back-to-back bogeys on No. 5 and No. 6 had some thinking it wasn’t going to be in the cards for the University of Texas alum.

But Scheffler was able to make birdie on the par-5 eighth and was just 1-over for his round before making the turn. After a birdie on No. 13 got Scheffler back to even-par for the day and the tournament, he walloped his drive on No. 14 with eyes on an eagle.

Scottie Scheffler’s second shot into the gargantuan 616-yard par-5 nicked a tree on its way to the green and left the former Longhorn short of the green. But the skillful Scheffler chipped his ball out of the rough, and as the crowd gasped with anticipation, it rolled directly into the cup from 55 yards away.

That chip on No. 14 catapulted Scheffler up the leaderboard and a 10-foot putt after a brilliant tee shot on the par-3 16th put Scheffler at 3-under for the day and the tournament. Scheffler would par the remaining two holes and will enter the weekend within striking distance of the leaders.

Scottie Scheffler put together a fabulous round of golf, going 5-under par over the final 12 holes during his play on Friday at the US Open.
