MJ Daffue is a relative unknown at the 122nd US Open. But his shot off a carpeted deck on the 14th hole at The Country Club will have everyone talking.

The 122nd US Open has a relative unknown atop the leaderboard. While Rory McIlroy was the most well-known golfer tied for the lead at the US Open after Thursday’s first-round, it MJ Daffue who may end up with the shot of the tournament.

No, it wasn’t a hole-in-one, or even a chip-in for eagle. A wayward tee shot from Daffue on No. 14 at The Country Club landed on a carpeted deck constructed for the event.

Surrounded by patrons, Daffue decided his best play was not take a drop, but instead decided to play the ball as it lies and hit it off the carpet.

US Open-leader MJ Daffue hit a ball off the deck!

To call the shot unconventional would be an understatement. It’s also not as if professional golfers practice this type of shot. Hitting on grass? Sure. Hitting out of sand? Yeah, no problem. Heck, we’ve even seen golfers hit a ball while standing in water. But off a carpeted deck?

But Daffue cleared the gallery out of the way and pulled fairway wood out of his bag. The 33-year-old South African let it rip and the crowd absolutely loved it.

MJ Daffue would go on to post a bogey on the Par-5, but after where his tee shot ended up, it was miraculous that he didn’t end up with a snowman on his card.

After going out with a -1 par 34 on through his first nine holes, the back nine proved to be much more difficult for Daffue. That bogey on the 14th was his second of the day on the back nine, and there were more to come.

The US Open is oftentimes referred to as golf’s toughest test. But that’s usually because of golfers hitting out of the unforgiving rough and putting across the lightning-fast greens, not necessarily hitting off a carpeted deck.
