Oklahoma football: 3 major questions Sooners need to answer
By John Buhler
This is now Brent Venables’ Oklahoma football program, so let’s get excited about that.
For the first time in over two decades, there might be more questions than answers when it comes to the Oklahoma football team.
This is because former Sooners defensive coordinator Brent Venables has returned to Norman to lead Oklahoma after Lincoln Riley decided to go Hollywood. Not only is this the longtime former Clemson defensive coordinator’s first stab at leading a program of his own, but Oklahoma will be joining the SEC alongside arch rival Texas sooner rather than later. Boom or bust, we cannot wait.
Of the many questions percolating around the Oklahoma program, these three really stand out.
Oklahoma football: 3 offseason questions the Sooners will have to answer
3. How concerned should Oklahoma be about a lack of wide receiver depth?
There are few things we know for certain when it comes to the Oklahoma offense. Dillon Gabriel will be the starting quarterback. Eric Gray will be the primary ball carrier in the ground game. Although Marvin Mims and Theo Wease project as the one and two in the receiving corps, how concerned should we be about what follows? Is Drake Stoops the No. 3 option at wide receiver?
This is no slight on Stoops, but the Sooners are going to need more than just three wide receivers to keep this ball rolling under a new coaching regime. Look for juniors Brian Darby and Trevon West to step up, as well as sophomore Jalil Farooq. Given that this is a new coaching staff for the most part, there will be opportunities for freshmen Nic Anderson and Jayden Gibson to get looks.
Jeff Lebby should be able to call a good game, but wide receivers will need to get open for Gabriel.
