Jenna Strauch of Team Australia competes in the Women’s 4x100m Medley Relay Final on day eight of the Budapest 2022 FINA World Championships at Duna Arena on June 25, 2022, in Budapest, Hungary.

In 2009, I worked as an editor for Getty Images during the Swimming World Championships, which was my first exposure to underwater cameras. The technology has changed a lot since then and this year, at the 2022 FINA Swimming World Championships, I have been lucky enough to be the benefactor of the hard work and trial and error of my colleagues and am lucky to be using this tool.

This photo of Australia’s Jenna Strauch is of her about to break the surface of the water in her medley race. The water has a wonderful texture, her shape dominates, and she is almost perfectly in the center of the frame, leaving me with an image I am very happy with. Learning new skills off of my talented colleagues at Getty Images and putting that knowledge into getting images like this are a big part of what I love about this job!

A’Nan Bridgett finishes 5th in the final of the Men’s Long Jump during the 2022 USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field on June 24, 2022, in Eugene, Oregon.

This photo was taken during the Men’s Long Jump Final. The stadium is positioned in a way that around 6 p.m., the long jump pit is in full shadow but on the other side of the track, there’s still full sun.  The exposures are wildly different, so I placed the camera next to the pit and set the exposure on what it would be for the full sun, not the shadow. I then photographed the athlete straight on with my handheld camera and had radio remotes on both cameras. When I pushed the shutter down on one it engaged the other to do the same. One camera was making a silhouette and the other was pointed at a different angle with everything in the shadow at the proper exposure for this kind of lighting.

Denny Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 FedEx Office Toyota, leads the field during the NASCAR Cup Series Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway on June 26, 2022, in Lebanon, Tennessee.

This photo was made during one of the many restarts that took place during this race as it was delayed due to rain and thunderstorms. The restarts are a chance to get the most cars together in one photo, and I wanted to give context of the Nashville signage and the fans as well. As is often the case, my colleagues were instrumental in making the event a success.

Albert Duraev of Russia faces Joaquin Buckley in their middleweight fight at the UFC Fight Night event at Moody Center on June 18, 2022, in Austin, Texas.

With MMA, action frames usually come from the disciplines – striking, grappling, and muay thai. In order to catch contact, you have to keep focus on the fighter facing you, whether they are delivering or receiving contact. Because defense is key for fighters, they are constantly switching stances and rotating throughout the cage. And as a photographer, you are shooting through a thick fence that isn’t close enough to your lens to be blown out, so pulling focus continuously is not an option. For this photo, it was a matter of luck and current camera technology. With a high frame rate, I was able to get peak contact showing just how much force is in each strike which we take for granted watching as spectators.

Gabriel Landeskog No. 92 of the Colorado Avalanche lifts the Stanley Cup after defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in Game 6 of the 2022 NHL Stanley Cup Final at Amalie Arena on June 26, 2022, in Tampa, Florida.

To me, it is one of the greatest honors to work any Stanley Cup Playoffs game. These games are unlike any other because every player out there is fighting for the right to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup. For the title game, I was tasked to shoot overhead action and with five minutes left, be ready to move onto the ice for the ultimate presentation. I photographed the game as usual and then spent the final five minutes of game action anxiously waiting and hoping. When the game ended, myself and photographer Bruce Bennett ventured out onto the ice. I moved onto the far end of the carpet away from the other photographers and captured this image. As the Cup was presented, fireworks exploded behind Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog and history was made.
