MLB legend Derek Jeter backed agent Casey Close, who’s recently found himself embroiled in controversy over Freddie Freeman’s falling out with the Braves.

Freeman’s departure was always a little odd, especially given his rumored preference to stay in Atlanta. However, the overwhelming storyline last Winter was that Freeman wanted a sixth year on his deal, and the Braves wouldn’t go that far.

This led to his eventual departure, as he signed with his hometown Dodgers on a six-year contract.

End of story, right? Not so fast.

Freeman returned to Atlanta last weekend for an emotional World Series ring ceremony. The Dodgers took on the Braves in a weekend set at Truist Park. The longtime Atlanta sports hero couldn’t hold in his emotions, and even parted ways with agent Casey Close over the weekend. Rumors regarding the split began to circulate, including one report spread by FOX Sports’ Doug Gottlieb.

Close denied this report vehemently, and vowed to pursue legal action if necessary to disprove it and clear his name. It’s easy to see why, as it would be a stain on the agency’s reputation if it were accurate.

It’s important to recognize that Close does represent Jeter.

“I have known Casey since I was 18,” Jeter began on Twitter. “Over the last 30 years, we have had our share of differences of opinion, but to this day, he remains a trusted advisor and friend. He is a man who values morals, integrity and above all else honesty and transparency.”

Jeter and Close have worked together since 1993. If anyone would know his intent, it would be Jeter.

Perhaps Close and Freeman weren’t a good fit, or Freeman simply needs a change of scenery as he sorts through his emotions. Freeman has yet to give much of a comment, and has instructed all agents not to contact him in the meantime.
