2. J.D. Davis won’t be on the Mets roster past the trade deadline

In other disappointing news for the New York Mets, J.D. Davis has also fallen short of expectations this season. Just like Dominic Smith, Davis was supposed to be part of a successful platoon at DH, but the former third-round pick hasn’t played up to his abilities this season.

Both Smith and Davis are regarded for their bats, but neither player has an OPS+ above 100 and the power hasn’t been there this season. Davis has only two home runs on the season and Smith has goose egg in that column.

Like Smith, Davis was floated as a potential trade candidate this past offseason, and much like Smith, he didn’t receive much interest. Davis could be more appealing to teams looking for a right-handed power-bat as his salary is ($2.8M) is much more affordable.

J.D. Davis will not become a free agent until after the 2024 season and he still has minor league options remaining. Davis and Smith are in a similar boat, and if the New York Mets look to make a change and add a bat at the trade deadline, both men could be on their way out of the Big Apple.
