Guardians: 3 players who won’t be on the roster past the trade deadline

The Cleveland Guardians look like they will be buyers at the trade deadline so they will have to get rid of some of their current players.

The Cleveland Guardians are in the midst of a four-game slide, bringing them back to .500. But even with the slide, they are right in the thick of the playoff hunt, as they trail the Minnesota Twins by 4.5 games in the AL Central and they trail the Toronto Blue Jays by 3.5 games for the final American League Wild Card spot.

In less than four weeks, the trade deadline will have passed and the Guardians will likely make some moves to improve their team before it comes. With those additions, there are three players that are likely to be on their way out of a Guardians uniform here soon.

1) Guardians catcher Sandy León

Like many teams, the Cleveland Guardians have struggled to get much offense out of the catcher position but they have had some good defense from their catchers.

Their problem of late has been the health of their catchers. Their primary catcher Austin Hedges is on the injured list. Their primary catcher in Triple-A (Bryan Lavastida) is also on the injured list in the majors so the Guardians purchased Sandy León from the Cincinnati Reds in late June.

León played for Cleveland in 2020 and after spending 2021 with the Marlins, the Guardians re-signed him prior to Spring Training this year. He didn’t make the team, though, and he signed with the Reds, where he was in Triple-A.

In eight games with the Guardians in the majors this year, he has an OPS+ of 58 but his defense has brought his WAR up to 0.1. However, when Hedges returns soon, León will likely be on his way out.
