Red Sox: 3 players who won’t be on the roster past the trade deadline

These three members of the Boston Red Sox roster will not and should not be on the team past the trade deadline.

Major League Baseball’s biggest seller in April won more than enough games to make themselves one of the prime buyers in July. The Boston Red Sox are serious contenders and a big part of contending is making roster decisions to field the best team possible.

In order to accomplish this, the Red Sox will have to make some trades. With incoming players there are outgoing ones, too. Some can be sent down while others may be designated for assignment.

When we wake up in the morning on Aug. 3, one day after the trade deadline, these three Red Sox will not be on the roster.

1) Bobby Dalbec will not be on the Red Sox roster past the trade deadline

How much more does Bobby Dalbec need to struggle before Boston finally uses one of those minor-league options on him? Franchy Cordero has seen his playing time at first base jump in a major way. Dalbec getting sent down to the minors feels inevitable and a trade deadline addition is the perfect time to have an excuse.

The Red Sox have a strong enough roster where they might not be looking to add to many bats. If there’s one position they should be looking, it’s first base. Cordero has played admirably but he hardly measures up to what you typically want from your everyday first baseman.

Dalbec, the right-handed one of the pair, has been far worse. This is not a good platoon situation even if they are more effective against opposite-handed pitchers.

The Red Sox need to be in the market for a first base upgrade. At the very least, Triston Casas should get a look on the major league level.
