Yordan Alvarez snub: 3 stats that prove Astros star was robbed as ASG starter
3. WAR: Yordan Alvarez breaks the trend
Players that are mainly designated hitters struggle to achieve high WARs because of the lack of the defensive component.
Alvarez has played more left field this season (32 games) than in previous campaigns, so that helps him in 2022, but there he is in third place in WAR in the American League behind only Devers and Judge.
To be fair to Ohtani he has not played the field at all in 2022, only pitcher and DH and his WAR sits at 1.7, thirty-second in MLB.
Ohtani fares much better in a DH-only comparison, coming in fourth, but still Alvarez has more than doubled Ohtaini’s WAR and it’s only midseason.
Alvarez leads all designated hitters in both leagues in WAR and his 4.0 number is seventh among batters at any position in MLB.
The All-Star Game voting is a popularity contest and one player plays for the Astros and carrying baggage for transgressions that occurred while he was in A and A+ ball, while the other player is near the second-largest media market in the nation and is an international fan and media favorite.
Shohei Ohtani will start the All-Star Game as the designated hitter, but the best designated hitter in the American League and MLB has been Yordan Alvarez and it’s not close.
