The Boston Red Sox need to get in touch with these potential surprise sellers and make a trade.

The Boston Red Sox know what it’s like to think you’re in one position and then look up and find yourself somewhere else. They started the year looking like one of the major trade deadline sellers.

After a few short yet rough weeks, they climbed back into contention and now appear to be right there along with the rest of the World Series contenders ready to buy over the next few weeks.

The Red Sox have some of the same needs they have had all year but also a growing hole in the rotation due to injuries. To fill that, and more, they need to get in contact with these teams looking more like sellers than buyers and strike a deal.

1) Red Sox trade target from a potential surprise seller: Carlos Rodon

Carlos Rodon signed with the San Francisco Giants with no purpose of getting traded mid-year. The Giants rolled through last year’s regular season and finished with 107 wins. Thinking they could repeat the magic, Rodon was one of their big offseason splashes to make up for the loss of some of the free agents they let go.

Rodon has been excellent for San Francisco. Unfortunately, as a team, things haven’t gone so well. They’re in rough shape with no shot at the National League West. In the wild card race, they now have some catching up to do.

The Giants clearly don’t have nearly enough to make a run in 2022. Thinking otherwise would be a mistake. They could hold onto Rodon then hope for the best or possibly even at to the roster only to see it go to waste. The smarter move would be to admit they just aren’t in the mix this season.

Rodon would be an unexpected gift for the Red Sox rotation. Decimated by injuries throughout the year, he might be a guy to help steady the ship.
