It may be a bit odd to have a current coach take over as a manager when a team wants a clean slate but Joe McEwing still may be able to do that.

McEwing, 49, is the third base coach for the White Sox and actually played for La Russa with the Cardinals in 1998 and 1999. But he has been on the MLB coaching staff for the White Sox since 2012 as third base coach (2012-2016, 2021-present) and bench coach (2017-2020).

With that experience, he knows the players well and when the grass was greener for the team, he was on the coaching staff.

He also has long been a managerial candidate as other teams have interviewed and/or considered him for their managerial vacancies. The Tigers interviewed him before they hired Ron Gardenhire and he was a candidate for the Cardinals’ opening this past offseason.
