Juan Soto rejects Nationals godfather offer: 5 teams that need to jump at a trade

Juan Soto has rejected a monster offer from the Nationals and the club will now explore trade options. Which teams need to rush to make an offer and play?

It seemed as if negotiatons between Juan Soto and the Washington Nationals were trending in a positive direction, particularly with the franchise sending the superstar outfielder a monster, godfather contract offer recently for a deal worth $440MM. But things have now taken a dramatic turn that could result in Soto being traded.

On Saturday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (subscription required) was first to report that Soto and his team rejected the Nats’ massive offer. More importantly, though, Washington is now going to “entertain” trade offers for the 23-year-old slugger in the wake of the contract being rejected.

This is massive news and an about-face regarding the way things were seemingly headed. And as such, it’s time to take a look at five teams that should now be looking to make a trade offer to the Nationals to try and land themselves a superstar in Juan Soto before the Aug. 2 MLB Trade Deadline.

5. Juan Soto trade destination: Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox are going to be one of the most interesting teams to watch at the trade deadline. They’ve been up and down this season more times than your favorite amusement park ride and could theoretically be buyers or sellers. Given the upside of the team as they get healthier, though, the smart money is on buyers.

As such, they would be wise to make an aggressive offer for Soto on the trade market, even if the money that the 23-year-old star will demand doesn’t necessarily fit the blueprint that Chaim Bloom has laid out thus far in his tenure.

With that said, the Red Sox outfield could stand to be upgraded with the production at the dish. There have been flashes from Jarren Duran, Rob Refsnyder and even Jackie Bradley Jr. throughout the year. Having said that, the consistency and the pop have not been there.

Soto would provide that and give this team another star still in his 20s to go alongside Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers — you know, assuming Boston ponies up to keep their stars as they should — for the long haul.
