Kirby Smart contract details: Georgia football throws the bag at their head coach

The Georgia Bulldogs made Kirby Smart one of the highest-paid head coaches in college football with a new contract.

Smart’s deal was already impressive, as it paid him over $10 million per season, but now there’s little doubt that Georgia views Kirby as one of the upper echelon of head coaches in all of college football.

Kirby won the National Championship last season, finally getting over the hump and defeating Nick Saban in the process. Doing so was the final bullet point missing on Smart’s resume as a college football head coach, and he did so in style, with a local product as his quarterback to boot.

The Bulldogs know what they have in Smart — a head coach who brings monetary value to the University. In doing so, they want to make sure he’s well-compensated, as well.

“Coach Smart’s impact on the University of Georgia extends far past his significant accolades as our head football coach,” J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Josh Brooks said, per a press release. “He and his wife are Bulldogs through and through, and it is evident that Athens and UGA mean as much to him as he means to us. I am excited for our football program’s continued success under his direction.  The future of Georgia Football remains bright with Coach Smart as its steadfast leader.”

Smart was set to make $10,250,000 this coming season. He will now be signed through the 2031 campaign, with annual increases as the years go by. In the final year of his contract, he will make $12,250,000.

“Mary Beth, my family & I are excited and grateful for the extension of my agreement with The University of Georgia. This is home for us, our roots run deep here. My commitment to this University and our Football program is unwavering,” Smart said.  “I’m thankful to President Jere Morehead and Josh Brooks for their continued support of Georgia Football.  It’s an honor being the head football coach at the University of Georgia, and while I’m certainly proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish, I’m confident the best is yet to come!”
