Vince McMahon built WWE into the biggest name in pro wrestling but the 77-year-old, amid a litany of controversies, announced his retirement on Friday.

With allegations of sexual misconduct and hush money paid to the victims surrounding WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, many in pro wrestling wondered what would be next for him.

The answer is retirement.

On Friday afternoon, the 77-year-old took to Twitter to announce that he’ll be retiring from WWE effective immediately.

Vince McMahon retires from WWE: Who replaces him?

McMahon’s retirement makes sense given the allegations surrounding him coupled with his age. It’s been time for him to step down and now he’s doing it.

The natural next question would be who would take his place in running the biggest pro wrestling promotion in the world, but that has seemingly been answered. Per Marc Raimondi of ESPN, Vince’s daughter, Stephanie McMahon, and WWE President Nick Khan will serve as co-CEOs in the aftermath of this decision.

It’s also worth noting that Triple H this week announced his return to the company in an executive role. That could certainly be tied to this forthcoming decision from Vince McMahon.

Regardless, this is sure to send shockwaves through the wrestling world and is a story that will be worth monitoring, most notably seeing what changes come to the promotion moving forward with someone else steering the ship.
