1. Xander Bogaerts

No one carries more value than shortstop Xander Bogaerts.

Prior to the season, Bogaerts expressed a desire to sign a new contract extension. As it turns out, neither side was able to get close to an agreement. Now, Red Sox fans brace for the chance that Bogaerts will opt out of his contract at the end of the season.

The Red Sox seemingly prepared for Bogaerts’ exit, as they signed former Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story to a six-year contract. While he is playing at second base, it is hard to envision him not making the move back over to his regular position.

Boston has a top shortstop prospect in the farm system in Marcelo Mayer, who may make it to the majors within the next two years.

Bogaerts could command a lot from contending teams. If the Red Sox do not feel they can re-sign him, then they should deal him at the deadline to ensure they get something in return.
