Tarik Skubal was surprisingly mentioned as a potential Tigers trade asset leading up to the deadline. A day later, he threw a fit in the dugout.

It’s unknown if those two events are connected, but players see everything. You can bet Ken Rosenthal’s reporting got back to Skubal, which suggested that even the 25-year-old ace could be on the trade block.

Rosenthal made sure to put a caveat on his reporting, however, stating Al Avila deems pretty much everyone not named Riley Greene or Spencer Torkelson an asset.

"“It is hardly a given the Tigers would trade Skubal, considering their own rotation needs as they head toward their sixth straight losing season. But like many teams, they are willing to consider any deal that might help them improve. And they entered Tuesday averaging a major-league low 3.22 runs per game.”"

It’s true, Detroit has been a mess this season. A.J. Hinch’s squad cannot score runs, and it begs to question just how many organizational holes the Tigers have moving forward — and this includes Avila and the front office.

Baseball fans in MoTown assumed the rebuild was nearly over before this year. What went wrong?

Yet, Skubal has been one of the rare bright spots for a Tigers team that has woefully underperformed. Would trading him, of all players, be the right answer when he’s under contract through 2026?

In the mist of all of this, Skubal pitched against the Padres on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite pitching nearly perfectly, Skubal left the game giving up two runs, none of which were earned thanks in part to a Harold Castro error.

Shortly thereafter, Skubal let his temper get the best of him, throwing a fit in the dugout and nearly hitting star outfielder Riley Greene with an errant cup.

A mild blow up, all things considered. It’s been a long season in Detroit.
