Yankees rumors: 3 biggest trade deadline mistakes

The Yankees made a few good moves at the trade deadline but they still made a few mistakes.

The New York Yankees made a move that was one of the most unsung best moves of the trade deadline: trading Joey Gallo. Gallo was a good defensive outfielder but he was awful at the plate.

In his last 29 games with the Yankees, Gallo was hitting .085/.253/.239, or six hits in his last 71 at-bats. He struck out 35 times in those 71 ABs.

They also got a decent prospect in pitcher Clayton Beeter, who was the Dodgers’ #15 prospect.

However, they made some big mistakes at the trade deadline. Here are the three biggest mistakes that the Yankees made at the trade deadline.

1. The Yankees did not get more starting pitching

The Yankees traded left-handed starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery to the St. Louis Cardinals for outfielder Harrison Bader. They did add starting pitcher Frankie Montas from the Oakland A’s but with transferring Luis Severino to the 60-day IL, the Yankees needed to get some more depth in their rotation.

As The Miami Herald reported in this article on Wednesday, the Yankees were in deep discussions with the Miami Marlins for starting pitcher Pablo López and the talks involved infielder Gleyber Torres. It seems as if they may have even thought it was a done deal so they went forward with the Montgomery trade.

But the Lopez trade didn’t happen. Given the Yankees’ injury history in recent years, they have a razor thin margin of error between good starters and young pitchers and/or and that’s never good.

It hurts even more (no pun intended) when Montgomery was traded for Harrison Bader, who is on the IL himself and won’t play until September.
