Pete Alonso ruled safe on controversial call at home: Best tweets, memes

New York Mets star Pete Alonso was initially ruled out after a tag at home plate by Atlanta Braves catcher Travis d’Arnaud. Instead, the Mets challenged the play, and Alonso was called safe.

What makes a rivalry game that much more intense? How about a controversial call? That is exactly what happened during the Aug. 6 game between the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mets outfielder Mark Canha hit a ground ball to Braves third baseman Austin Riley, who then threw it to catcher Travis d’Arnaud. Mets star Pete Alonso was heading to home plate and collided with d’Arnaud, and was called out in the process.

Alonso indicated that he was safe, and manager Buck Showalter decided to challenge the play. Following a review, the umpires overturned it and called Alonso safe, giving the Mets a 4-0 lead.

Twitter reacts to controversial call in Mets-Braves game

In the case of any controversial call in a baseball game, Twitter users are going to have differing opinions. That was exactly the case, as many said Alonso was safe, while others believed he was out.

Alonso was, well, understandably hyped about being New York’s fourth run of the game following the overturned call. As was all of Citi Field.

Meanwhile, d’Arnaud was checked out by the team’s training staff following the collision and eventually had to be helped back to the clubhouse. He was replaced in the game by William Contreras.
