Yankees trade deadline addition coming to save New York on Sunday
By Scott Rogust
One of the New York Yankees’ big trade deadline additions is scheduled to make his debut with the team on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals.
After the All-Star break, the New York Yankees have fallen back to reality, losing 9 of 15 games entering Saturday night. To begin their road series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, they lost 4-3 after reliever Clay Holmes surrendered a game-winning, two-run double to Paul DeJong in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Yankees need to get back on track, and luckily for them, one of their big trade deadline acquisitions makes their debut with the team on Sunday.
Manager Aaron Boone revealed that pitcher Frankie Montas will start his first game with the Yankees on Sunday, where he is expected to arrive the night prior.

Frankie Montas to make Yankees debut on Sunday vs. Cardinals
Having Montas make his debut could not have come at a better time. Recently, starters have had some trouble, the most notable being Gerrit Cole, who surrendered six runs on three homers in the first inning of New York’s 7-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Aug. 3.
Montas entered the season as one of the top pitching targets at the deadline. He did miss a brief period of time after dealing with right shoulder inflammation. Following his return, Montas showed that the injury did not affect his pitching speed, and hence the competition to acquire him at the deadline.
The Yankees acquired Montas and Lou Trivino from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for prospects J.P. Sears, Ken Waldichuk, Luis Medina, and Cooper Bowman. Montas did not make his debut sooner due to being placed on the bereavement list.
Through 19 starts, Montas recorded a 3.18 ERA, a 1.137 WHIP, 109 strikeouts, and 28 walks in 104.2 innings.
Ironically, Montas will not be the only trade deadline acqusition to make their debuts during the weekend Yankees-Cardinals series. Jordan Montgomery makes his debut for the Cardinals on Saturday. He was traded by the Yankees in exchange for outfielder Harrison Bader.
