He’s on an emotional journey that showed during Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves.

“Stepping out there was a little emotional,” deGrom said to ESPN. “I took a second, tried to take it all in, and then tried to focus and try to take care of business.”

Over 5.2 innings — including a perfect game through five innings before allowing a walk and a two-run home run — deGrom struck out 12 and helped bring the Mets to a 5-2 victory. His success has his teammates and Braves manager Brian Snitker’s attention.

The veteran pitcher is quickly making his mark this season. His teammate Brandon Nimmo shared that he “feels bad for anyone who has to face [deGrom].”

“I just feel bad for whoever has to face him. He’s throwing 101, 102 [mph] out there, and he’s locating everything. Hats off to him for getting healthy and getting back to us. He’s primed and ready to go,” Nimmo said in the same ESPN piece.

Snitker agreed and stated, “good God, there’s nothing wrong with him.”

The 34-year-old pitcher entered a talented roster this season, so it’s quite the feat for him to stand out so much in just two games.

The Mets are one of the best teams in the league. They have the fifth-best ERA (3.60), sixth-best opponent batting average (.233) and fifth-best WHIP (1.18). His talent will likely make the team even better.
