Longtime Oklahoma football coach Cale Gundy resigns after racial slur

Cale Gundy resigned in disgrace as the wide receivers coach of the Oklahoma football team.

After spending nearly all of his adult life in Norman, former Sooners quarterback and Oklahoma football coach Cale Gundy has resigned from his post after using a racial slur during a team film session.

Gundy tweeted out a statement on why he is stepping down after coaching at his alma mater for nearly a quarter century. He had been on the Sooners’ coaching staff since way back in 1999.

"“Last week, during a film session, I instructed my players to take notes. I noticed a player was distracted and picked up his iPad and read aloud the words that were written on his screen. The words displayed had nothing to do with football.”"

This is why you don’t read stuff aloud without first vetting it. What could possibly go wrong here?

"“One particular word that I should never – under any circumstance – have uttered was displayed on that screen. Ih the moment, I did not realize what I was reading and, as soon as I did, I was horrified.”"

Of course, we all know what word he said, and that is why Gundy now finds himself out of a job.

Taking over for Gundy effectively immediately is offensive analyst L’Damian Washington.

Gundy had been the offensive coordinator at OU under Lincoln Riley. While he was demoted on Brent Venables’ staff, Gundy was about to enter his first year as solely their wide receivers coach.

While those who follow the Oklahoma program closely know all about Gundy, he is best known nationally as being the brother of Oklahoma State football head coach Mike Gundy, who too has found himself in hot water over things of this nature before. Though Mike Gundy has been leading his alma mater’s program since 2005, it was not that long ago when his OAN shirt became a thing.

If there is any good news from this from the Oklahoma perspective, it is that Gundy was not the Sooners’ offensive coordinator. When Venables was hired, he was able to pry former Ole Miss offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby back to Norman. However, this is Venables’ first stab at being a college football head coach. He was a phenomenal defensive coordinator at Clemson previously.

Ultimately, Oklahoma still has a chance to win the Big 12 this season, despite going through its most chaotic offseason in a generation. Riley’s departure for USC has left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth. Though OU will remain the gold standard in Big 12 before it departs for the SEC, Baylor, Oklahoma State and potentially Texas all have eyes on the prize over in Arlington.
