The Atlanta Braves are calling up their top prospect Vaughn Grissom … and like Dansby Swanson, he’s shortstop.

The Atlanta Braves announced a flurry of roster moves on Wednesday morning, changing the landscape of their roster. The biggest move was in calling up their top prospect, shortstop Vaughn Grissom. And calling him up could make Dansby Swanson sweat a bit.

Vaughn Grissom is the No. 1 prospect and the only prospect in the Top 100 list (#98 overall) for the Atlanta Braves, according to MLB.com, and he is getting called up to the major leagues.

He has been at High-A and Double-A this year but with Orlando Arcía’s injury, the Braves have had Grissom skip Triple-A and go right to the majors.

Braves: Vaughn Grissom promotion could make Dansby Swanson sweat a bit

In 74 games at High-A, Grissom was hitting .312/.404/.487 with 11 home runs, 55 RBI, and 20 stolen bases. He has only played in 22 games at Double-A but he was hitting .363/.408/.516 with three home runs, 12 RBI, and seven RBI there.

If Grissom is successful in the majors, he really could make Dansby Swanson sweat a bit.

Swanson, 28, is having a great season but he is a free agent at the end of the season. This year, Swanson was an All-Star and he’s currently hitting .292/.348/.464 with an OPS+ of 122. He also has 16 home runs, 59 RBI, and already has a career-high of 14 stolen bases. In addition, he is leading the majors in games played with 111.

The Braves want to keep their core intact for years to come, as they have already extended third baseman Austin Riley earlier this year and they already have Ronald Acuña Jr., Ozzie Albies (who’s currently on the IL himself), and Matt Olson with the team through 2027 (including Albies’ team options).

If Grissom shows that he can play at the MLB level, Swanson could be somewhat expendable this offseason, especially if he demands a high asking price.

While some fans wouldn’t like it, the Braves could then reallocate the money toward other players on the free agent market, trade market, or even extend one of their other players.
