Mariners pitcher takes beautiful potshot at Yankees after series win

The Seattle Mariners aren’t quite as developed as the New York Yankees, which made a victory even sweeter for a Mariners pitcher.

The Seattle Mariners aren’t nearly as developed as the New York Yankees, so when Seattle won a three-game series against New York, the victory was especially meaningful. Mariners reliever Paul Sewald was impressed by the win.

Sewald told Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, “We don’t have Aaron judge on our team. We don’t have a $35 million pitcher. But we have 26 guys that are all really good and all have a key part of this team. And when they do their job, we end up winning more games than we’re losing and that’s the key.”

The Mariners are far below the Yankees in terms of payroll and proverbial star-power, but their potential remains extremely high.

Seattle is one of the worst teams hitting-wise in MLB. They have the sixth-worst batting average (.231), 10th-worst slugging percentage (.383) and 12th-worst OPS (.697). They fall close to league average in on-base percentage, with the 14th-best (.314).

The Yankees, however, are one of the best teams. They have the third-best OBP (.330), second-best slugging percentage (.442) and second-best OPS (.772). Their batting average is roughly league average, falling 14th-best at .244.

The Mariners have a good rotation, however. They have the sixth-best ERA (3.67), 10th-best opponent batting average (.236) and sixth-best WHIP (1.21). Despite being one of the best teams in pitching in the league, the Yankees are still slightly better.

The Yankees have the third-best ERA (3.30), OBA (.218) and WHIP (1.11). They’ve also struck out the fourth-most batters (1023).

For a smaller market team to beat such a prestigious team in baseball is a huge confidence booster that should give them a jolt as they try to hang onto their wild card spot.
