Carlos Correa rumors: 5 teams that can steal him from the Twins this offseason
By Tim Boyle
Prepare for another winter of Carlos Correa rumors as these five clubs look to steal him from the Minnesota Twins.
Carlos Correa rumors helped to headline the most recent MLB offseason. When it was the Minnesota Twins who eventually signed him, the baseball world was stunned.
Correa settled on a player-friendly contract paying him $35.1 million this year with the same total available for two more years. There is a catch. Correa has a player option in 2023 and again in 2024 and he’s likely to use it and test free agency again.
Be prepared for another winter of Carlos Correa rumors. And it’s these five teams we can expect to look to steal him away from the Twins.
1) Carlos Correa rumors: The Chicago Cubs make sense
The Chicago Cubs were a destination for Correa prior to him signing with the Twins. Instead of going big, Chicago went after Andrelton Simmons and Jonathan Villar for their shortstop duties. Both have already been designated for assignment.
With the Cubs hoping to retool rather than rebuild, it could make sense for Jed Hoyer to take advantage of Correa’s second straight trip into free agency. Is he the shortstop the Cubs should go after?
Considering the high number of shortstops available last offseason and again this winter, the Cubs shouldn’t be doing right by the fans to not land someone. There are certainly alternatives to Correa. However, with his age and talent, he’s a nice match for Chicago.
The Cubs probably won’t win a whole lot in 2023. But if signed to a long-term deal, Correa should be around when they are more competitive. The division they play in isn’t particularly good. An addition like Correa could be a great next step toward being good again.
