The New York Mets are calling up prospect Brett Baty for the rest of their series with the Braves as they try to hold the NL East lead.

It wasn’t long ago that New York Mets fans were excited because one of their top prospects (No. 2 to be exact) Brett Baty made the move from Double-A to Triple-A. But after only six games following that move to Syracuse, he’s set to make his major league debut.

On Tuesday ahead of New York’s second game in a four-game series against the surging Atlanta Braves, the team is calling up Baty to the MLB roster and he will join the team at Truist Park, as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Oddly enough, it was just Monday when manager Buck Showalter seemingly poured cold water on this move happening, but perhaps a 13-1 loss to the Braves on Monday night was enough to make him and the front office reconsider.

Mets call up Brett Baty with NL East race with Braves tightening

Baty, a left-handed hitting third baseman and outfielder, has been mashing in the minor leagues this season, hence the hype around him.

In 89 Double-A games this season, he slashed .312/.406/.544 with 19 home runs and 59 RBI. Though he’s played only three games with Triple-A Syracuse, he’s continued to show the bat as he’s slashed .364/.462/.364 in 26 plate appearances, though he’d not recorded an extra-base hit over that span.

Even still, this is a big move for the Mets as they are clearly trying to do what they can to give the roster a jolt with the Braves having closed the gap on them in the NL East to just 4.5 games after the Monday night blowout.

Baty has hit at every level, now it’ll be on him to provide that spark at the plate in the majors and help New York finish off the phenomenal season they’ve started.
