UNC football head coach Mack Brown names Drake Maye his starting quarterback for Week 1.

Mack Brown took one look at his UNC football roster, channeled his inner Justin Timberlake and decided it’s gonna be Maye who starts under center for the Tar Heels on Saturday night, alright.

Before you blast some Petey Pablo in your nearest parking lot, preferably in the vicinity of both a Bojangles and a Harris-Teeter, what do we need to know about Drake Maye? The younger brother of the North Carolina basketball legend Luke Maye beat out Jacolby Criswell to be heir apparent to chicken tender enthusiast Sam Howell in Chapel Hill. It’s not just Bo Time, it’s go time for UNC, bro!

The North Carolina Tar Heels open up with the Florida A&M Rattlers in Week 0 on Saturday night.

Brown reiterated he would feel comfortable starting either Maye or Criswell, echoing offensive coordinator Phil Longo’s sentiment that both quarterbacks seem to have a strong grasp of the offense. Although the Tar Heels struggled mightily a year ago, Maye now has his opportunity to be every bit as good as his predecessor was before him, as well as live up to the hype of his surname.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Maye was a four-star recruit in the 2021 recruiting class. The 6-foot-4.5, 220-pound quarterback from Charlotte was the No. 3 overall prospect from The Tar Heel State, the No. 9 player at his position group and the No. 56 overall player in his recruiting cycle. He would be seen as the best athlete in most families, but his big bro won tourneys, bruh…

Ultimately, Maye enters a pretty favorable situation, all things considered. North Carolina is not expected to do much after stumbling out of the gate vs. Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Howell may have saw his 2022 NFL Draft stock plummet after last season, but Brown tends to get the most out of his quarterbacks, whether that is in Austin or in Chapel Hill on either occasion. Good luck!

Maybe the Tar Heels are poised to make some noise in the ACC this year when no one is looking?
