Braves: 3 trade deadline moves Atlanta is lucky they didn’t make
By Tim Boyle
3. The Braves wouldn’t have been so lucky with Joey Gallo
Joey Gallo was someone the Braves kicked the tires on before he was eventually traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The struggling Yankees outfielder has actually played much better since the change of scenery. It was necessary for them to sell him to any team that would take Gallo. The Dodgers agreed to it. What if it was the Braves instead?
We cannot assume Gallo would have thrived in just any environment. He was dragged through the mud all year in New York. He needed the right situation. Atlanta may have been it. However, with a far greater need for him to excel, it might have been a disaster waiting to happen.
Regardless of how much better Gallo plays for the Dodgers than he did for the Yankees, Braves fans should be satisfied knowing he’s not a member of their ball club. For every hot week he has, another ice-cold month is lurking. The Braves may have had a colossal problem on their hands, adding to the Marcell Ozuna issue they have already.
What the Braves did so well at the trade deadline was put faith in the players they already had. This includes Vaughn Grissom, whose promotion to the big leagues has gone about as well as it could.
