Look for Auburn football head coach Bryan Harsin to name TJ Finley his starting quarterback.

It is going to be a long year for Auburn football fans, but head coach Bryan Harsin has to name a starting quarterback first.

ESPN’s Chris Low reported on Sunday the expectation is that Harsin will go with TJ Finley over Oregon transfer Robby Ashford and Texas A&M transfer Zach Calzada. The former LSU transfer started games late last season after taking over for an injured Bo Nix, who essentially swapped places with Ashford. So a transfer quarterback beat out two other transfer quarterbacks? Got it!

Auburn begins the season on Saturday night when the Tigers welcome Mercer into Jordan-Hare.

Auburn football: Bryan Harsin expected to name TJ Finley Tigers starting QB

While Finley has the most experience playing at Auburn of anyone in contention for the job, we know what the Tigers will be offensively with him at the helm, which is not going to be good enough for Harsin to keep his job beyond this year. He finds himself in an impossible situation thanks to the Auburn boosters doing whatever they want and getting Allen Greene to resign.

Although Ashford may have had a chance, Calzada did beat arch-rival Alabama a year ago at Texas A&M. That may be the peak of his college football legacy, but his best was better than the best we have seen out of Finley up to this point. While Harsin has been impressed with Finley’s command of Eric Kiesau’s offense, it remains to be seen if this team is going to win more than six games.

Ultimately, this has the potential to be a year from hell for Auburn football. We are all pulling for the players and the coaching staff to just win anyway. Not only do the Tigers play in the SEC, their two biggest rivals just played for a national championship in Alabama and Georgia. Auburn needs a reset in the worst way possible. For now, let’s ride with Harsin and Finley down on The Plains.

It is going to take nothing short of a miracle for Harsin to be leading this program entering 2023.
