Chicago Bears roster cuts tracker: 53-man roster moves
The Chicago Bears need to get their roster down to 53 players. While long, the process is challenging as there is the risk of letting go of good players, and it’s on Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus to make those calls.
It’s decision day, and the Chicago Bears are about to make some tough decisions as they trim their roster down to 53 players. This doesn’t include the potential waiver wire moves that general manager Ryan Poles indicated would happen once the dust settles.
Right now, only a few select players don’t have to worry about their jobs, including franchise quarterback Justin Fields and linebacker Roquan Smith. However, for many who wear blue and orange right now, there is the possibility that they may not be on the roster and could face either being out of a job, on another team, or revert to the practice squad.
Chicago Bears roster cuts: Mario Edwards Jr released.
This may sound a bit surprising, but given how younger players on the Bears’ defensive line have improved, been on the field, and made valiant cases for themselves, it seemed natural that the Bears would choose to move in this direction.
There’s more work to be done to fit the front line to Matt Eberflus’ liking, but it will likely feature more youth than a heavy veteran-laden core, except Robert Quinn. Poles stated that he needs a younger team, and Edwards doesn’t fit that bill, unfortunately, so that’s likely why combined with lack of availability, the Bears are moving on.
Chicago Bears roster cuts: Nathan Peterman released
Peterman has survived another NFL experience, somehow. Pretty much every team he’s been on, he’s impressed in the preseason but proven to be nothing more than a depth option. Chicago hopes to re-sign him to the practice squad once he gets through waivers.
Chicago Bears roster cuts: Sam Kamara released
Despite leading the team in quarterback pressures from the defensive line position, Kamara has been cut. He’s a practice squad target as well, though another team could pick him up first.
Chicago Bears roster cuts: Updated list
The Bears, like most teams, will leak a number of roster cuts throughout the day. While we can’t possibly keep up with all of them, expect Chicago’s official website to keep track of the cuts as they happen.
