Chiefs greatest moments No. 2: Drafting Patrick Mahomes
In the 2017 NFL draft, the Chiefs traded two firsts and one third-round pick to move up from 27th to 10th overall in order to draft Patrick Mahomes. Kansas City had won three-straight AFC West division titles leading up to the 2017 draft but hadn’t advanced beyond the divisional round in any of their playoff appearances. The trade for Mahomes was made after now-GM Brett Veach pushed his tape on then-GM John Dorsey and Coach Reid from Mahomes’ freshman season at Texas Tech.
The level of importance that Patrick Mahomes plays in the growing history of the Kansas City Chiefs is immeasurable. Today’s NFL is nothing more than a sprint to find the guy who can line up under center and lead your team to the promised land. Mahomes is 100 percent that guy for the Chiefs. They expressed their commitment to him in 2020 with an extension that ensured he would be in Kansas City through the 2031 season.
In each of his first four years as the starter, the Chiefs have hosted the AFC Championship game at Arrowhead. They have made two trips to the Super Bowl, and have brought the Lombardi Trophy back to Kansas City once.
From the accolades to the winning to his contributions to community growth in Kansas City, Mahomes is more than just the guy for the Chiefs. He has brought hope and inspiration to Chiefs Kingdom like no other player since Len Dawson.
