Serena Williams final appearance at US Open may be with sister, Venus
By Ian Levy
Even if Serena Williams doesn’t play deep into this year’s US Open on the singles side, she’ll have a chance to make some lasting memories with Venus in the doubles field.
A surprise announcement from Serena Williams earlier this month that she would likely retire from tennis after this year’s US Open has turned the event into her swan song. She won her first-round match against Danka Kovinić (6-3, 6-3) and will face Anett Kontaveit Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. in the second round.
However, sentiment aside, Serena is a long shot to advance through and was given just 40-1 odds to win before the tournament started. But even if she bows out early in the single’s competition we may see her later in the tournament, as she and sister Venus Williams are also in the doubles field.
Who will Serena Williams and Venus play in Round 1 of US Open Women’s Doubles Tournament?
The Williams sisters were a late addition to the doubles field and will play Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova in their first match. Per the US Open official website:
"The Williams sisters received a wild card for the 2022 US Open in doubles on Saturday and on Sunday, they learned their fate: They’ll face Noskova and her 37-year-old compatriot Lucie Hradecka in Round 1. Hradecka is a three-time Grand Slam champion between women’s and mixed doubles—including a triumph at the US Open in 2013, where she and then-partner Andrea Sestini Hlavackova defeated the Williams sisters in the semifinals."
