Serena Williams takes on Anett Kontaveit in the second round of the US Open on Wednesday, Aug. 31.
Earlier in August, Serena Williams announced that she will be stepping away from the sport of tennis. Williams hinted that the US Open would be the final tournament that she will participate before calling it a career.
Inside a jam-packed Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, N.Y., Williams defeated Danka Kovinic (6-3, 6-3) in the first round of the US Open. Her opponent in the second round will be none other than Anett Kontaveit, the second-ranked women’s tennis player in the world.

Who is Anett Kontaveit?
Kontaveit is a tennis star from Estonia, and as mentioned earlier, is the second-ranked women’s player in the entire world.
According to WTA Tennis, Kontaveit has a 381-193 record in singles competition. Kontaveit won six singles titles, with her most recent win being the St. Petersburg Trophy this past February. Kontaveit earned approximately $7.7 million in career prize money.

In her historic career, Williams has won 23 Grand Slam titles. The last time Williams won a grand slam was in 2017, which she clinched after defeating her sister, Venus, in the finals of that year’s Australian Open.

Yep, it’s safe to say Williams is ready.
Serena won the first set in a tiebreak thanks to some clutch serves.
Kontaveit won the second set with relative ease, 6-2. Down at one point, 3-1, Williams did make a run on serve, but blew a 40-0 lead.
Williams won the third set, 6-2, to advance to the third round.
